WHAT IS YARD DRAINAGE?

Yard drainage systems—often called surface drainage systems—are designed to collect and redirect surface water that accumulates on your property. These systems capture rainwater, irrigation runoff, and sheet flow before it can pool, erode soil, or migrate toward your home and foundation.

Yard drainage typically uses catch basins, channel drains, and underground piping to intercept water at ground level and move it safely away from structures.

Unlike French drains, which relieve subsurface groundwater, yard drainage systems address visible surface water problems before they become structural or landscape issues.

KEY COMPONENTS

  • Catch basins and grated surface inlets
  • Channel drains / trench drains (for patios, driveways, pool decks)
  • Underground drainage pipe (typically 4" or 6")
  • Gravity-fed slope (typically 1–2% depending on site conditions)
  • Pop-up emitters or daylight discharge points
  • Root intrusion protection and filter fabric (where applicable)

PROBLEM SIGNS TO LOOK FOR

Yard Drainage Problem Signs

WHEN YOU NEED YARD DRAINAGE

STANDING WATER IN YARD

Pools of water that remain 24-48 hours after rain indicate poor drainage. This kills grass, creates mud, attracts mosquitoes, and prevents yard use.

LOW-LYING AREAS

Natural depressions or improperly graded areas collect water from surrounding surfaces, creating persistent drainage problems.

SOIL EROSION

Channeling, gullies, or washed-out areas indicate excessive surface water flow that needs to be controlled and redirected.

PATIO & DRIVEWAY FLOODING

Water pooling on hardscapes indicates improper grading or lack of drainage infrastructure to handle runoff.

TYPES OF SURFACE DRAINS

CATCH BASINS

Square or round grated boxes installed at low points to collect standing water. Features sediment trap to prevent pipe clogs. Ideal for yards, driveways, and patios.

CHANNEL DRAINS

Linear grated trenches that intercept water along driveways, sidewalks, or patios. Efficiently captures sheet flow before it reaches problem areas.

AREA DRAINS

Low-profile grated drains placed in lawn areas to capture surface water. Can be easily mowed over and blend with landscaping.

TRENCH DRAINS

Heavy-duty channel systems for high-volume water management along garage doors, gates, or property perimeters.

OUR INSTALLATION PROCESS

01

SITE ANALYSIS & DESIGN

Map water flow patterns, identify collection points, and design optimal drain placement. Evaluate root systems and determine protection methods needed.

02

PRECISION EXCAVATION

Professional sod cutter removes and preserves grass. Excavate for catch basins and drainage pipe with engineered 2% slope for optimal water flow.

03

DRAIN & PIPE INSTALLATION

Install catch basins, channel drains, and underground piping. Apply copper-based root protection systems. Connect to proper discharge locations.

04

RESTORATION & TESTING

Backfill and compact soil, replace original sod to minimize landscape impact. Test system with water to verify proper flow and drainage performance.

WHY ZEROGRADE FOR YARD DRAINAGE

ENGINEERED 2% SLOPE

We engineer systems with 2% grade—double the industry minimum—ensuring superior water flow, faster drainage, and zero pooling in pipes.

CLAY SOIL EXPERTISE

Specialized knowledge of North Texas clay soil drainage challenges. Our systems account for poor percolation and soil expansion/contraction.

MINIMAL LANDSCAPE DISRUPTION

Professional sod cutter equipment preserves and replaces original grass. Clean installation process maintains your yard's appearance.

NDS CERTIFIED INSTALLATION

Professionally certified by NDS, following industry best practices for surface drainage and water management systems.
